BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB football program and head coach Bill Clark announced a partnership with the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research on Monday.
Along with bringing awareness to the fight against prostate cancer, UAB Athletics Foundation Board member Tommy Brigham stated that members of the UAB Athletics Foundation board and Bill Clark have already pledged $25,000 as a challenge gift to the Mike Slive Foundation.
During the month of September, UAB fans and the Birmingham community are encouraged to make a donation to complete the challenge and join the Mike Slive Foundation’s determination to put a stop to prostate cancer.
The Blazers’ football game versus Conference USA opponent Charlotte on September 29th will culminate Prostate Cancer Awareness month with an on-field check presentation during the game.
“When we launched the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research last fall, we knew we have a special opportunity to utilize the platform of athletics in the fight against prostate cancer. Our ongoing partnership with UAB Athletics is a perfect example of this. This is our chance to make a difference and be a part of this end of prostate cancer. I’m doing this for my father. He was doing this for each of us. He used to say he was doing this so none of us would ever have to go through what he went through” said Anna Slive Harwood, President of the Mike Slive Foundation.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men (after skin cancer) and is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men. Typically occurring in older men, prostate cancer will be diagnosed in about one in seven men in their lifetimes.
“The UAB football program prides itself on playing for more than just football itself, and this partnership is extremely special given Mike Slive’s influence on Conference USA and in the Birmingham community,” Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. “We are thrilled about partnering in the fight against cancer and generating awareness and additional funding for such a worthy cause.”
The good news is that with early detection and more cutting-edge research, additional lives can be saved. The Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research is a new weapon in the fight against prostate cancer with a very simple mission: Saving lives by funding cutting-edge prostate cancer research.
“Our athletics programs continue to use their platform for great causes,” said UAB President Ray L. Watts. “UAB prides itself in our many collaborations across campus and with the community, and we are proud to partner with the Mike Slive Foundation to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer research.”
The Mike Slive Foundation endeavors to become a global leader in the fight to eradicate prostate cancer through public awareness and research funding in memory of Mike Slive, a transformative leader whose vision and direction revolutionized the business of collegiate sports.
