BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – The second annual Mike Slive Invitational will be played between Auburn University and Saint Louis University on December 14th at Legacy Arena at the BJCC. The game will tip off at 3pm and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
The Mike Slive Invitational is an annual basketball event developed to support the Mike Slive Foundation and its mission to end prostate cancer through research and education. This will be the second appearance in the Invitational for the Auburn Tigers and the first for the SLU Billikens. Both teams won their respective conference championships in 2019, and Auburn advanced to the Final Four, a first for any team from the state of Alabama.
“The Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research is making a huge difference, said Bruce Pearl, Auburn University Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “Prostate cancer is both treatable and curable when detected early and treated properly. However, if it goes undetected, it could also be a cancer that kills. Auburn basketball’s commitment to play in this Invitational now in its second year is real. Our desire to play in Birmingham every year and take Auburn basketball on the road is real. I want to thank UAB last year and Saint Louis University this year for agreeing to join us to try to make a difference. To all of our fans throughout the state, one of the best chances to watch us play is to buy a ticket in Birmingham on December 14th. We can create a sellout and, on that evening, as good of an environment as there will be in college basketball.”
Mike Slive was the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference from 2002-2015, commissioner of Conference USA from 1995 to 2002, and the first commissioner of the Great Midwest Conference upon its founding in 1991. Through his work in college basketball, Slive impacted thousands of lives both on and off the court.
"We’re very excited to be hosting the second annual Mike Slive Invitational in Birmingham this December,” said Anna Slive Harwood, Executive Director of the Mike Slive Foundation. “I was thrilled when Coach Pearl reached out just after the Final Four to say he wanted Auburn to again be a part of the Invitational this year. The national exposure that this game brings to the Mike Slive Foundation is critical to our mission of saving lives by funding research and raising awareness of prostate cancer. That we can use college basketball and Mike Slive's name to do that would make my father smile. We’re grateful to Auburn and Saint Louis for joining us in this fight."
“We are excited to be part of the second annual Mike Slive Invitational,” said Travis Ford, Saint Louis Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “This will serve as a great opportunity for our basketball team to get the chance to play a great program like Auburn while also supporting the Mike Slive Foundation. It’s an honor to play in a game that celebrates the wonderful life and career of Mike Slive.”
Tickets to the Mike Slive Invitational are on sale to the public beginning October 25th and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.
Proceeds from the game will support the Mike Slive Foundation, which was created in 2017. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with one in nine men receiving a positive diagnosis in their lifetime.
