BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – The Mike Slive Foundation raised more than $400,000 in the month of September for prostate cancer research and awareness, making the total amount of donations raised $1.25 million since September 2017.
On Thursday, September 26th, the Foundation hosted its annual Beyond Blue event. Numerous collegiate coaches, administrators and supporters, including Auburn Tigers Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl, CBS Sports Insider Tony Barnhart, and Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, filled the Alys Stephens Center for a wonderful night to remember Mike Slive and to raise a significant amount of money for prostate cancer research. ESPN and SEC Network reporter Laura Rutledge was this year’s emcee of the event.
The Mike Slive Foundation honored Hatton Smith, a prostate cancer survivor and tireless promoter of Birmingham. CEO emeritus of Royal Cup Co., Smith’s professional and personal philanthropy is enriching the social fabric of our community. He was instrumental in the fundraising efforts that built the Rotary Trail, revived UAB’s football program, and materialized plans for BJCC’s Protective Stadium. Smith is an executive committee member of the Birmingham Business Alliance. Additionally, Smith sits on the Birmingham-Southern College board and the Mike Slive Foundation board and advises many local nonprofits.
"We had tremendous growth and success with our Beyond Blue benefit last month,” said Anna Slive Harwood, Executive Director of the Mike Slive Foundation. "Special thanks to our 2019 Beyond Blue Co-Chairs Tommy Brigham and Clete Walker, and our honoree Hatton Smith. The more we can all talk about prostate cancer, and use the platform of college athletics to do so, the more lives we can save.”
