BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA – The Mike Slive Foundation continues to help further its mission by awarding five $50,000 grants that focus on prostate cancer research from across the Southeast. The addition of these five grants brings the total to 12 grants that the Mike Slive Foundation has funded since its inception in 2017.
“In the last three years, the Mike Slive Foundation has continued to grow our funding of prostate cancer research,” said Anna Slive Harwood, Executive Director of the Mike Slive Foundation. “We are proud to have increased our recipients each year. Last year, we funded four grants in Alabama, and this year we are funding five grants throughout the Southeast. It was important to my father that we support innovative, promising research across the country that can bring us closer to a cure.”

Developing Culturally-Tailored Interventions to Increase Prostate Cancer Screening Among African-American Men – Monica L. Baskin, PhD – The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Targeting the CD24/p53 axis for Lethal Metastatic Prostate Cancer Therapy – Runhua Liu, M.D., Ph.D. – The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Impact of Physical and Cognitive Function on Treatment Selection and Outcomes of among Older Patients with Prostate Cancer – Jingjing Qian, Ph.D. – Auburn University
Identification of NCOA6 as a New Oncogenic Driver of Neuroendocrine Prostate Cancer (NEPC) – Jianming Xu, Ph.D. – Baylor College of Medicine
Unveiling the Roles of Neuroendocrine Cells in Prostate Cancer Development – Jiaoti Huang, M.D., Ph.D. and Jung Wook Park, Ph.D. – Duke University
Guided by a commitment to find a cure for prostate cancer, the Foundation funds pilot grants for innovative research that allows researchers to establish proof-of- concept when applying for larger, highly competitive federal grants. The Foundation uses a peer-review process modeled after the National Institutes of Health to select the grant recipients. In 2019, the Foundation expanded the reach of its grant initiative to 10 additional states in the Southeast and has plans to expand nationwide in the coming years.
